Pediatric Hematology and Oncology

What is pediatric hematology and oncology?

We know that childhood illnesses are challenging for the entire family, and this is reflected in the care we provide with our pediatric services and support. Our pediatric hematologists / oncologists specialize in treating a variety of conditions in children – from newborns to young adults – including complex cases with blood disorders, sickle cell anemia, leukemia and solid tumors.

Our pediatric hematology / oncology team offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care, and a number of different treatments. We will work closely with you and your family to provide all the information, resources and support services you need.

Pediatric oncology treatments, services and procedures

Blood disorders

For children dealing with blood disorders, a visit to our clinic may include a blood collection or transfusion, or targeted therapies. Be assured that our experts will make your child feel as comfortable as possible at every stage of their treatment.

Cancer and bone marrow failure syndrome

We understand the special needs of children with cancer. All our treatments are administered in a caring environment and may include chemotherapy, bone marrow aspiration, biopsies and lumbar punctures.

What to expect from pediatric hematology and oncology

You will be invited to meet with our highly trained specialist doctors, to create a dedicated care plan for your child. After deciding on the best path forward, we will order the necessary tests, medications and other referrals to start your unique plan. Your child may receive treatment as an inpatient or outpatient, based on your physician’s recommendation.

Laboratory results are very important to your child’s treatment plan, and you can expect to routinely visit your local laboratory prior to all appointments or treatments. Our nursing staff will call you 48 hours before your child’s appointment to review their laboratory work, or remind you to have this completed before coming to the clinic. For all procedures, you will be given detailed preparation instructions before attending.

On the day of treatment or infusion, we will check your child’s general health, and their laboratory values will be reviewed if necessary. We will keep you informed of results and what is going on at every stage of treatment. It is important that you let your child’s nurses know if they feel unwell or have a fever, as this may affect their treatment. We will often place children and their families with other children undergoing treatment, to make them feel more comfortable.

As treatment may be customized to your child’s particular needs, there may be a wait for medication or therapy to arrive. Every effort is made to limit your wait time, and ensure the high quality and safety of medication. Your child’s treatment can last between one and eight hours, depending on the type of therapy they are on.

Following treatment, you will continue to meet with a doctor as necessary. Directly after treatment, you will be given discharge instructions and we will discuss possible side effects, complications or other concerns. Once your child’s course of treatment is complete, they may continue to be monitored by our pediatric care team for several months.
