The moment she saw the look on the father’s face as he entered the JHAH Emergency Department followed by baby Arwa struggling for breath in her mother’s arms, registered nurse Fraulein Tabuzo knew something was seriously wrong.
The parents had just driven to the JHAH Emergency Department with their baby. A drive that must have seemed like one of the longest of their lives.
When baby Arwa arrived, Fraulein Tabuzo already had two patients, one with stomach pain and another with a fever. After seeing the infant, Fraulein had no need for triage, Arwa came first.
Fraulein was working that day/evening as the primary triage nurse. It was her responsibility to use the international triage system to determine how critical a patient is so the most critical, life-threatening are cared for first.
Her training immediately taking over, she took baby Arwa from her father’s arms, headed for the resuscitation room calling out “choking baby.” As she went, she gently turned Arwa over with her head lower than her body and began resuscitation techniques, administering firm but gentle blows between the shoulder blades to try to dislodge the blockage.
Once in the resuscitation room, she sat and placed the infant on her thigh while continuing but after no response, she gently turned the baby over and began chest thrusts using her fingers.
While Fraulein worked to dislodge the blockage, the rest of the ER team had been in action following JHAH protocol. Doctors Eiman Aljishi and Feras Mimarji and team were preparing in case the infant went into cardiac arrest, which at that point was a real possibility. They had also contacted the operating room in case baby Arwa had to be rushed into surgery.
Thankfully, after a few thrusts, Arwa’s breathing became less labored and her skin color returned to normal. Baby Arwa was saved.
At that point, Dr. Eiman Aljishi examined the baby. She removed a small bit of apple from her mouth and determined that all appeared fine. But to be sure she decided to observe the child in the ER for an hour or so and after ensuring baby Arwa was completely fine, she was allowed home, cradled in mama’s arms.
“I cannot say how happy my wife and I were when Arwa stopped choking,” said her father, Mohammed Almohammedali. “I am so glad we rushed to JHAH. Without Nurse Fraulein and the wonderful team, I do not want to imagine what could have happened.”
Emergency cases such as this are the reason for the Emergency Department. Our highly trained, dedicated medical professionals are there for this type of true emergency when the situation is life or limb threatening.
To ensure the Emergency Room team is always ready to provide emergency treatment, please go to the Emergency Room only when there is an actual medical emergency. That way, when seconds matter our lives like five-month-old Arwa could be lost, the team can respond without delay.
