For individuals aged 45 to 74, regular screening for colon cancer is highly recommended. One of the most straightforward and effective methods is the annual stool test, which can detect hidden blood in the stool—an early sign of colon cancer. It’s important to remember that the presence of blood doesn’t necessarily indicate cancer; it could be due to other conditions such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or inflammatory bowel disease.
For those at higher risk, such as individuals with a family history of colon cancer, a colonoscopy may be suggested. This procedure provides a detailed view of the colon and is crucial for preventing cancer by identifying and removing polyps before they become malignant.
