Endocrinology

What is endocrinology?

If you suffer from diabetes, hyperthyroidism or other hormone disorders, our endocrinology, diabetes and metabolic diseases team is here to help, providing diagnoses, education and treatment. The endocrine system is made up of glands, which release hormones to control different functions in your body. When these hormones enter the bloodstream, they are transported to organs and tissues. If they are not working properly – for example, if there are too many, or not enough, of them – they can cause ill health such as thyroid, growth or insulin (blood sugar level) problems.

Endocrinology treatments, services and procedures

Our experts will take an in-depth look at a wide variety of symptoms to find out if you are suffering from a deficiency or excess of one or more hormones, and will then decide on long-term care management.

Most endocrine disorders, including diabetes, mellitus, hypothyroidism and metabolic syndrome, will need lifelong care. We believe that the better we understand you on a personal and social, as well as a molecular, level, the better we can work with you to make your treatment as effective as possible.

What to expect from our endocrinology services

You will be referred to the endocrinology service by your Primary Care physician, and will usually see a consultant at your first clinic appointment, which will last between 20 and 40 minutes. At the clinic, we will carry out assessments and tests to help us build a clear picture of your illness.

Preparing for treatment

We may need to take blood and urine samples, or carry out X-rays – usually on the same day as your clinic appointment. Test results will be discussed at your next outpatient appointment. If we need to start treatment before the appointment, we will get in touch with you and your Primary Care physician.

Post-treatment and preventive care

Following your treatment, we may stay in touch with follow-up appointments, or refer you to some of our colleagues in other specialty teams.

Our patients say it best

My wife and I would like to pass on our appreciation to Dr. Bilal Al-Tartir, as he is always very supportive and cooperative.

[Thanks to] Nurse Rowena and reception, who called me back and assisted with changing my appointment before my visit. This meant a lot to me, and I appreciate their attitude, desire to help, and politeness and courtesy.
