On April 25, a multidisciplinary team of surgical specialists was convened by Dr. Ahmad AlShadwi, consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon and Dr. Hasan AlAjmi, consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon, to conduct the first JHAH complex resection and reconstruction of the tongue and mouth floor.
The 62-year-old female patient came to JHAH with an extensive history of tongue cancer that in 2018 had been surgically removed (resected) and followed by radiation therapy at another healthcare provider. The patient was referred to the JHAH Plastic Surgery Clinic for decaying and necrotic jaw tissue and bone after having been treated at other hospitals in the Kingdom and in the US.
The team included Dr. Ahmad AlShadewi; Dr. Abdulaziz AlAbidi, head and neck surgeon; and Dr. Hasan AlAjmi.
The case involved complex resection and removal of affected parts of the jaw bone, tissue of the mouth floor and half of the tongue. This was followed by reconstruction of the affected parts of the mouth and tongue using living tissue taken from the patient’s forearm.
Using the most advanced microsurgery microscope, Dr. AlAjmi conducted an extremely challenging microvascular anastomosis with Dr. Mohammed Mahmoud, plastic surgery staff surgeon, to obtain the necessary living tissues from the patient.
After the successful procedure, the patient is comfortably recovering at home with her family.
JHAH Back Referral
Did you know that Saudi Aramco employees and their dependents, who are registered with a JHAH network provider (MDF), can request to have their surgery performed at JHAH?
Do you want to know more? You can request a call-back from our team, and we will walk you through the process and eligibility criteria.
Another JHAH Equipment First
JHAH is the first health organization in the region to have the Mitaka Microscope MM51, the highest resolution microsurgery microscope available today. A critical tool in the first complex resection and reconstruction of the tongue and mouth floor procedure at JHAH, the Mitaka MM51 allows plastic and reconstructive surgeons to work at the sub 1 millimeter level of precision, which is extremely important for reconstruction and cosmetic procedures.
